Update: Spoke with Johnny. "Poop" as published by Johnny Brewton for X-Ray Book Co. (pictured above) was printed true to the original manuscript. The version later published in a book was slightly edited. Johnny recently communicated with John Martin by email. Johnny will soon be posting...

Dear mjp, the destruction matters. Your stance against it is admirable. On my lunch hour today, I watched the video that zobraks linked above (thanks zobraks--great video). I wrote an email to Johnny Brewton. I asked: "Have you heard of the controversy about 400+ Bukowski poems appearing in his...

published buk back in the day

Michael, I just read your features "The senseless, tragic rape of Charles Bukowski's ghost by John Martin's Black Sparrow Press," and "The senseless, tragic rape of Charles Bukowski's ghost; the prequel." Intriguing reportage. I haven't read "The tragic flogging of a dead rape horse, a.k.a...

PM, Wow, the BSP broadside is substantially different from Bukowski's original poem printed in Relentless As The Tarantula. I wonder who made the revisions? Martin in 2001 or Buk in the '80s? The additions weaken it quite a bit.

    Boyhood - the film

Skygazer, did you see Boyhood? The first third or perhaps quarter, I was a dubious viewer of the Blu-Ray. Then, "it kicked in" for me and I loved it.

    What Are You Reading?

Interesting that you made that pilgrimage. I found 1984 to be transportive on the revisitation. Suspension of disbelief was the natural setting. Terrifying, tender-hearted, truespeak stuff. Jura around Orwell's rented house sounds like an I. Bergman film. How adventurous of you, Skygazer. "I...

    What Are You Reading?

I'm currently reading Patrick Wensink's Broken Piano for President (Lazy Fascist, 2012), a copy of the First Printing featuring the Jack Daniel's-style cover art that prompted an attorney for Jack Daniel's Properties, Inc., to send a cease-and-desist letter direct to the Kentucky author, not the...

NOTES OF A DIRTY OLD MAN (ESSEX HOUSE ORIGINAL 1969)

Rock and roll. Thanks Hank Solo. Circa 28,000 copies were published 24 January 1969. Big difference between 28K and 90K. It's a scarce item and a great book. I'm in no rush to sell it. From Bukowski's Foreword to Notes of a Dirty Old Man: "More than a year ago John Bryan began his underground...

    Steve Richmond

Steve Richmond (January 24, 1941 - October 20, 2009). RIP. Richmond's friends David Garcia and Ben Pleasants visited Richmond last week and got to spend time with him. Nearly blind from cataracts, Richmond was wracked with pain yet had retained his characteristic sense of humor. Sad day. Jan...

Interesting! I had no idea there was further "chatter" on this discussion thread. This is Mike Daily. To everyone who took time to comment, THANK YOU for your thoughts. On August 8, 2009, I got a message from poet and novelist Alan Kaufman, who contributed an excellent paragraph-quote to my...
