If you could ask bukowski one question.....

I like that. Small talk, try not to annoy him, hope things get interesting. Bring beer. That's what I'd do. Why do people get all butt-hurt when mjp does what he does? Don't they read through some threads before they start one? Sometimes mjp snapping at half-wits is the only thing that...

The Fall (novel) [a.k.a. What was the first novel you read?]

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, a gift from my 3rd grade teacher. I cried when they "killed" Aslan, and didn't realize at the time that he was essentially Jesus in a cat costume. I read The Winter of Our Discontent not too long after that, for some reason. When I really got rolling as a...

Last CD you bought/ Book you read

mjp, I read Bass Culture after reading your post and I'm really glad I did. Fascinating read. The most coherent explanation of Rasta I've read, too. I think I'll skip the Cruise bio and find a good one on Bob Marley instead, though. Any suggestions?

The best beers (not the so-called king of beers)

I'll have to try dogfishhead again then. I tried the 60 minute a few weeks ago but I think it was past it.

    Wanda Sykes

Hour and a half, but it goes by fast. The "broke dick" bit was good but I really loved the broken schools bit.

The best beers (not the so-called king of beers)

if you're hops fan look for Hop Stoopid (highly hopped IPA but with with some kind of hop extract as well). To me it's absolute candy. Sierra Nevada's fresh hops ales are also spectacular.

Obama Wins The Nobel Peace Prize

It's about something different every year. I'm not involved, who am I to dictate the qualifications they consider? Perhaps it's an expression of relief, that the US is going down the tubes less quickly than reelecting W would seem to have indicated. Great points, Bill.

Obama Wins The Nobel Peace Prize

I think SNL summed it up best--Fred Armison as Obama explained he got it for "not being George Bush".

Obama Wins The Nobel Peace Prize

Did you see or read his speech this morning? Sounds like he feels the same way.

    Howdy.

I'm still pretty new here, but from what I've seen, most things are OK, but few things are Okie. That said, Okie is definitely O.K. It's way beyond my authority to welcome you, but I like your brevity.

Last CD you bought/ Book you read

the debut album from Scottish rock band We Were Promised Jetpacks, called These Four Walls. I've played it about 10 times this week and 3 and half times today (so far), and I just can't stop. Irony is overrated, anyway. The last book I read was Lamb by Christopher Moore, or as I like to call...

Has reading Bukowski changed your personal life?

Thanks, Lolita. I guess you could say I still romanticize it some, but my vision is much wider now. the world makes me sad and frustrated, but drinking too much makes me clinically depressed. When I first started drinking, a senior in high school, Nothing's Shocking was just out and I'd...

    The Continual Condition

came in the mail today. only made page 17 tonight but I had to read let's have some fun and the wasted profession 3 times apiece because I completely related. someone once asked me what I do for fun and I said "I don't believe in fun". a friend within earshot said, "he's not kidding". still...

Has reading Bukowski changed your personal life?

That's a great way to put it. I had already realized that booze could grease the wheels, but after reading Bukowski, I thought I could opt out of just about everything but booze and the written word. I didn't go to school, I drank myself silly, I wrote jack shit. I told myself I was just too...

    Was Bukowski A Genius?

I would say he had a certain genius. Or at least ingeniousness. And a buttload of talent. Many geniuses have no talent at all.

Hey that was fun to read, man. Reads more like Henry Miller than Buk, though. You sound like you'd be fun to share a jug with. How was Tales of Ordinary Madness (the movie)? I have but haven't seen it.

Would the be the letter where he advised Buk not to make the mistake of drinking when writing? Hilarious.

trailer park boys I just caught the last two and a half seasons, broadcast here by directtv, and they've started again from the beginning. It's my new favorite thing. That's a great shot of Bubbles, maybe I should've used that.

    Bukowski and Henry Miller

Under the Rooftops of Paris is definitely pornography. But his novels never struck me that way. Nin wrote some (fairly soft) porn too. I know it well because it was the closest thing to pornography in my local public library when I was a kid. I loved the diary (or at least that chunk around...
