    Kierkegaard

Funny I stumbled upon this thread today, I just began reading Fear and Trembling. The Preface begins: "Not merely in the realm of commerce but in the world of ideas as well our age is organizing a regular clearance sale. Everything is to be had at such a bargain that it is questionable whether...

    nfl wild card predictions

The Steelers didn't get the normal 3 points because they already lost to the Jags ... albeit it was tied with 2 minutes to go. I don't think homefield means much when you cannot even walk on it without sinking to yer knees. Pitt's D has looked bad the last three weeks. They will have to step it...

    nfl wild card predictions

The more I think about it ... The Bay of the City of Tampa will put up a fight no doubt but The G-men are 7-1 on the road this season. Kevin Boss is playing great at TE for the injured Shockster. I don't know, it is hard to bet on an offense run by Manning the Younger. Gerard is right about...

Thanks a lot man. I have read the elder Fante. I will look into the others. Again thanks, it is always nice to get suggestions from others instead of from bestseller lists. Cheers.

Thanks Jordan. I am gonna give him a go. I will check out his journals as well. Was all of his stuff published by BSP? Who else has been that would be worth sinking rotten teeth into? nevermind, i just searched the catalog. but your authors to try would be nice.

    Wyndham Lewis

Has anyone read Wyndham Lewis? I found a used copy of The Vulgar Streak over the holiday. It was published by Black Sparrow. Apparently he was better known for painting rather than writing but it seems worth investigating. Anyone?

I would only disagree with the Seattle pick. Washington is riding a wave of emotion. A better bet would be if Joe Gibbs is awake or asleep.

    When did you discover Bukowski?

late summer nights in '97 & '98 a friend and i would meet up at country kitchen, drink coffee, smoke cigs, and read out loud to each other. the waitresses would sit with us on their breaks and listen and laugh bum cigs and bring more coffee. one night after i read a particularly long passage...

Bukfan- You are very welcome. The next set of letters is due to be released in March or April of 2008. It will be called The Mutineer: Rants, Ravings, and Missives from the Mountaintop 1977-2005 There is a new bio by Corey Seymour, who I believe writes for Rolling Stone, called Gonzo coming...

    Hunter S. Thompson

Indeed a brick and a good, entertaining, and insightful one. It is the second of his "F&L Letters". Better to start with "Proud Highway" if you are into the chronological order of things. Starts early and ends where "F&L in America" begins. A third installment of letters was supposed to be...

Pull Me Through The Temples, Pull Me Through The Wine - Targets 4, 1960

Whoop-tee-do, I have a degree in Literature. I had a professor that once told an entire class, "If it don't move ya, move on." What moves me is obivously not gonna always move you or you or even my mother. What is a shitty poem? One that reeks of nothing. No emotion, no raw intensity, no blood...

    Authors I should like & don't

While I was getting my degree in Lit I was always being force-fed Hawthorne. Cannot and will not stand him. James Fenmore Cooper is a bore. Henry James was a hack. I agree with Girl, anything by Jane Austen and the Pretentious Brontes is enough to make me grab my shotgun. Huh. Good thread...

Buk Trivia... Answerer becomes next Questioner

Easy to look up better if already known- One of my favorite shorts by Buk is Class. After knocking out Papa, Henry is asked a series of questions including: "What do you do?" "What is your occupation?" "Do you have a hobby?" What are the answers he gives? maybe not the greatest question...
