Maltese cross

In Bukowski's car was hanging the Maltese cross. Why? What it meant for him?

He wrote that he was originally given a WWI iron cross by his grandfather Leonard when he was a young boy (before WWII).

Although it was lost later, I believe he bought another to remind him of the original. This replacement was the one he had in his volks. He later wrote that he left this cross tied to the door of one of his girlfriends 'Tammie' in Women.

It was a German Iron Cross. He called it Maltese cross by mistake. It is not an uncommon mistake.

An Iron Cross has the shape of a Maltese cross. That's why some people call an Iron Cross for a Maltese cross.
