Recommended Bukowski poetry books for newbie

"War all the time" is my fave, but that changes from time to time. He got better as he got older in my opinion. His late 50's and 60's word was more abstract and metrical than what developed starting in the 70's. I prefer latter but respect and understand anyone who prefers his earlier...

    if you like bukowski...

They are very different. Both have a theme of alienation in their writing. (I retract the 'similar punch' quote)

    if you like bukowski...

Yea. I suppose in style delillo is different from Bukowski, but he captures the theme of alienation and the nature of humanity(usually the pits) with similar punch.

What age did you first encounter Buk?

30 YRS old, was flicking thru channels, saw the Taylor Hackford (1973) documentary on Public Broadcasting Station. I was hooked. It changed everything, (much for good, some for bad, some remains to be seen).

The mystery of Jane C. Cooney (Baker)

I was always disappointed that there is only one photograph, even with her life of the periphery. Certainly there are more out there - and as interest in Bukowski grows (more books, deeper research), I'm sure they will be found(attic somewhere).

    Shortest poem ever?

My favourite short Bukowski poem, thought not the shortest (the truest, though): After the spirit wanes, the form appears.

    Thesis about Charles Bukowski

This place is brutal, even by Bukowski standards. But hell, I dig it the most.

Bukowski's effect on how you work (or don't work)

Does anyone/many/some on this forum have a similar view as Bukowski towards their own work/job? I, like many, have some of that same Bukowski view - and to be honest in can be a hinderance and at other times a help. I think the corporate world is any many ways as conformist in design as the...

X-Idol - (the last night of the earth poems)

Does anyone know what actor Bukoski is referring to in the above poem found in, The last night of the earth poems? He refers to an actor in a long running series.

That's pretty candid and says alot, as he always did.

Bukowski's 17 day detainment for the charge of draft evasion

Thanks, enjoyed WW2 & Moyamensing Prison. I found a short story: The Life of a Bum ( Septuagenarian Stew) in which he describes Harry being jeered at by some soldiers in 1943) and a little later in the barber shop he says- on thinking about himself - " He was without honor, a dog without a...

Bukowski's 17 day detainment for the charge of draft evasion

Perhaps this was covered in another thread: can anyone point out a Poem (I believe he may of coverered in in Ham on Rye- but it's been a while since i've read it) in which he referred to this episode of this life?

What would Bukowski think of modern culture?

Yea, there is alot of noise. But there was alot of noise then. And the 'smalls' he submitted to had scant circulation. I'd say he would be bigger now with the internet/twitter - he was TIRELESS in his pursuit of avenue. Reading his letters leads me to think he was compulsive in his writing...

What would Bukowski think of modern culture?

Yes - he would have been VERY active on twitter, internet etc. We no longer have the 'smalls' in the same way were back then, but there is a wide and growing (and good for poetry/writing) growth of poetry, fiction, art ezines/magazines. Many (perhaps 30%) still print - not that it matters...

    Bukowski's popularity in Europe

He may be viewed as a bit cynical for broad American culture and, naturally, a better fit for European modern culture.

What would Bukowski think of modern culture?

You are a wise man. From reading his massive volumes of letters to editors in the 60's - he was a very ambitious writer (although he downplayed this and almost silent). The man would have used social media in the same way he disciplined himself to send out thousands of poems to small press...

    When did you discover Bukowski?

I was flicking through the channels and got to PBS (Public broadcasting station - USA) and Bukowski was reading "Law" (It's Authorized) in the Taylor Hackford Documentary. It just summed up the World and how things (don't) work.
