    An interview with John Martin

Very interesting. He brought up the decline of books as part of his decision to sell out, which is shrewd. I, for one, continue to buy paper books because they're simply easier to read than a screen. Plus, I can sell or give a book away when I'm done with it. When I look at book reviews online...

The Fermi paradox (a.k.a. Where all the aliens at?)

10/10 thread. Makes me almost miss working a job where I got calls from schizophrenics at 2am.

    "Hell boils with laughter."

    What Are You Reading?

Been reading Last Exit to Brooklyn. It took me a while to adjust to Selby's writing style, but it's very satisfying, and has a natural flow.

    Another "New Bukowski" is here.

This is one time when I have to say that the forum is wrong. Shaw is a fucking genius. This book is about about a guy, right? And this guy, he rides a motorcycle and he's in love with a crackhead-philosopher-prostitute. I mean, as if this weren't cool enough already! But get this: he's addicted...

    Bukowski books in public libraries

My local library has 1 item: The People Look Like Flowers At Last. The University of Texas library (a few towns over) has 53 items listed. There are also 133 items listed at a rare books center on the same campus which includes novels, poetry collections, art, etc. A lot of the books in the...

Photos of Buk's Philly Residences and Work Place, Possible Bar

Next time you try something like this please, please record the call. It would be priceless.:DD

    What can be said?

I really liked your Window Tramp story. That said, there ought to be a rule against promoting your writing in a first post.

    Bukowski lives!

Shiver me timbers! This thread has been struck by the curse of J Martin!

    Bukowski lives!

You need a picture of yourself on the cover of the book, preferably holding a beer while showing off your awesome snake tattoo.

How would Bukowski be resonded to today?

Are you implying that you aren't full of it now?

    Louis Ferdinand Celine

Thanks, skiroomalum. Now I've got a mental image of Céline performing an endless anti-semitic rant while tending a patient.

    Stolen books. Guess who.

I started reading Bukowski at a university library in 2012. A year later many of his books had disappeared from the shelves. It wouldn't surprise me if someone is stealing old and/or rare books simply to sell them to bidders online.

    Louis Ferdinand Celine

    You mean Semmelweis?

Faye Dunaway on Barfly; Excerpts from her book

I created my forum account at 5:28am. It has no relation to Bukowski. :)

    What Are You Reading?

The film left me cold, with the exception of the ending, which was a nice touch.

Cory Bantic here and in rehab.

He was not only useless as an officer and a bad influence amongst the men, but it was plain that at this rate he must soon kill himself outright, so nobody was much surprised, nor very sorry, when one dark night, with a head sea, he disappeared entirely and was seen no more. "Overboard!" said...

    Cigarettes

Are there any chainsmokers on the forum? Anyone who has successfully quit? I've been smoking for about a year and have been having a hell of a time stopping. There's something very comforting about "taking a break" and going outside for a smoke. It breaks up the tedium of daily life. When I go...

    William Burroughs

I gave my copy of Junky to an acquaintance in Mexico City during Day of the Dead weekend. It was a good weekend.

    William Burroughs

Good points. The only thing I'd add is that Burroughs appears much less sympathetic to his characters than most. Even Bukowski and Celine show characters with rare moments of humanity. Does that make sense?
