how many people here are into bike riding?

Woah!? I didn't even realize I was on the attack. So be it. Although fault is mine for not letting anybody else in on the joke except myself. Most days I think whether one rides a 3 speed huffy or some pristine $5000 Italian piece of art there is no difference, just as long as we ride...

how many people here are into bike riding?

Ah, so these are the bikes Ghandi was talking about when he said modern man's greatest inventions are the bicycle and the loom...with their aerodynamic sleak look, titanium water bottles, 78giggy watt computers, and diamond plated spokes. Sincerely, The Fanatical Vegan of Bicycle Riding

Seen any good movies lately? - Films you MUST see

lol... Just got through writing about the last cheap room I lived in. 210 a month, the lowest of the totem pole for even Birmingham, Al. Of the 10 occupied apartments only the African exchange students seemed sane. They were smart, didn't mingle with anyone. The rest...billowing shit...

Well, let's not mix apples with pomegranates here. Film is film and applying words like "good" or "bad" although vague is at least acceptable. With people and the world at large and whatever my current environment is not only do I refuse to shield my eyes from the imperfect and un-immacualate...

    Best ever cover songs

Jimmy Hendrix "All Along the Watch Tower" Jeff Buckley "Hallelujah" an old nameless Hobo who showed up at a party I was at in Austin, Texas did a kick ass version of the Spice Girls "If You wanna Be My Lover" on his banjo :)

Paul, It's not my intention here to quote and subsequently pick at what may have been a quickly written sentiment (which the spirit of I ultimately agree with), but I can't stop going to the cinema. I will always go to the cinema. Maybe that's where these Film Companies and Dream Factories...

Christ, I should be banned from any further movie talk for using this phrase in reference to Peckinpah's Staw Dogs! I retarct that "social commentary" shit... It's more like an explosion in the face of our deepest unknown fear of who we are, what we are capable of. It offers no answers, only...

Seen any good movies lately? - Films you MUST see

The direction this thread has taken with the chatter about Fight Club and Sam Peckinpah I for one find pretty interesting. Peckinpah seemed pretty tuned into violence, even his own. Not only is this apparent in his westerns (which - much like the work of Buk - have their real meanings glossed...

Being There with the excellent Peter Sellers and Gregory Peck in To Kill a Mockingbird also did justice, to say the least, to the respective books by the same name.

I'm with you on that Paul. I've had friends try to get me to read Pynchon, Barth, Barthelme, Paluchnik, Eggers, etc., and I've tried a bit; none of it, none of it, stacks up to the Titans. And the 19th century Russians: will there ever be Men that can write like that again? But I do...

Just got through with Don Delillo's Running Dog. It might be interesting for you to read this book immeadiately following viewing "Hitler footage." Delillo was definetly after getting the movement of cinema into this book.

    Coupla questions?

What kind of dad was Buk? and how'd his kid(s) turn out? - was it just the girl he had? I understand that the one thing isn't always related to the other, but.... and How much (if at all) was Buk writing during those 12 years he worked at the post office?

While I got the attention (I think) of a coupla Brits, just wondering: Whadya all think of Colin Wilson?? I enjoyed "The Outsider" and "Relgion and the Rebel", but there's.....something....that.....bugs me (I suppose) about the guy. Anything else by him worth my time?

    hi buk fans

As I'm living overseas at the time I can't check any of this out, but I'm sure you're right about it at least being in one of Miller's "Big Sur" books, or at least I'm guessing it wouldn't be in any of the NY books. I only say this because it was Powys The Lecturer that Miller found initially...

    someone recommend something new?

Good for you. You're lucky to have it. Is it the 6 vol. set? I've only gotten through a couple of the volumes. I haven't exactly given up on reading it per se, but it has settled into my reading life as something more akin to reference material than anything else. I imagine that...

    hi buk fans

I know Miller mentions (even quotes, if my shady memory is correct) JCP's Meaning of Culture in Plexus. Glastonbury Romance is one I haven't gotten to yet, but Wolf Solent, Defense of Sensuality, Autobiography, and Dostoievski are among my favorites. Where does Miller mention Glastonbury...

    hi buk fans

Hey maxie, just out of curiousity (and here I perhaps prove to be the geek I am) how is John Cowper Powys viewed in Wales. What a find he's been for me! I came to him via Henry Miller and read everything I could get my hot little paws on. Talk about a misfit, huh. But one who refused to...
