This Message is to Brenda,
I have some information regarding your print, do you still have it?
I hoped you could send a better image of the work, so we can include it in the book coming out about Tom's artwork,
Would love to visit more with you about the artwork-

probably worth a hunderd or so apiece...really just depends on the print. can you post some photos?

I was wondering if anyone had some idea of the value of my signed Thomas Benton Lithograph with Hunter S. Thompson's signature and thumb print in gold. I have seen a few similar to this in the past, but not this exact print. Tom Benton gave this one to me as a gift back in 2001 when they were both still alive. I believe there is only one other exactly like this.

hard to say since it's almost one of a kind (one of two with a thumbprint?)...nothing to compare it to. around $800-$1000, that's my guess...

Thanks James! I've since done some more research & have found That the same poster without the Hunter Thompson signature & thumbprint are being sold on the Tom Benton website for Between $10,000 & 15,000 each. Now I just have to find the right place to sell it!

Well, not to be a pessimist, but using the artist's website is not the best gauge of value.

Current offerings:
Aspen #4 TEXT $5,000 on Benton's website. $750 on ebay with a $1500 buy it now.
Aspen Wall Poster #4 $5,000 on Benton's website, $850 ebay Buy it now after failing to sell recently for $850 and $450.

Recent closed auctions:
Hunter for Sheriff #5 Offered for a whopping $15,000 on Benton's website, Sold on ebay for $875 last week and another for $1075.

It seems that a good gauge of value is to take the price that they are offering it for on the Benton website and figure that you can buy one (or sell yours) on ebay for 10% of that. I know that using ebay is a shit way to value art, but I'm not sure who would buy a poster for 10x the price that they are being offered for from week to week.

Now, yours is certainly more owing to the signature and thumbprint, but you should use the realistic base price and then add to it for the rarity instead of starting at the inflated price and working up from there.

I don't know about that. Sales on eBay are the best barometer of real world value of most things.

A lot of art might sell for more outside of eBay, but does that mean it's worth more? I'm not sure. The art world is such a bag of shit it's hard to tell which way is up.

We bought a couple of small paintings by the artist in the video below from a gallery for $4k (and felt like we were getting a bargain because his work has always been hard to come by - he would never sell it when he was alive). Then a year or two later, we bought a much larger painting by the same artist on eBay for about $400.

Thing is, I think I could easily get the gallery owner to appraise the eBay painting for six to eight thousand dollars, since that's what he charges for work that size.

So what are those paintings really worth?

I've been buying, selling and watching Benton's work online now for about 7 years, and there's no way in hades that someone's gonna pay more than $1000, much $10,000!.....i'm not tryin' to be a bummer or jerk or what have you, just being realistic. and I mean, yes, it SHOULD be selling for thousands and thousands, I think Benton's work is definitely worth that, but as others have mentioned, ebay is the best way to judge and value pretty much any art, book, etc...and things are selling in the $300 to $1000 range.
I just pulled the trigger on this print, which I've wanted for years...its worth double or triple what I paid, but it just wouldn't sell until the seller came down to below $500...

Did you just pull the trigger on that print? HST would have liked that too.
With a gun, you could just take it, I bet.
Sorry, I could not resist.:)
Congrats, James!
