Celebrating Bukowski at the Huntington

I hear that Harry Dean Stanton was very drunk for his readings. I heard this from someone who also read there... mjp, Did you notice this?

Also, I heard that Neeli was a big hit....
I didn't get the impression he was drunk, but then he's probably a professional drinker, and it's hard to tell with that type sometimes. ;)

Neeli was definitely the highlight, because aside from Linda, he was the only person who spoke who had spent any considerable amount of time with Bukowski, so he has a lot of stories.

I wasn't putting down anyone due to their fame or celebrity. The ac-tors I was referring to were not celebrities, they were Los Angeles stage ac-tors, and for the most part they really, really missed the mark, and that's why I ragged on them. Of the three who (over)acted poems or excerpts, I had the feeling only one of them had ever been within pissing distance of a Bukowski book, and he was still hard to watch. The other two might as well have been reciting Sam Shepard plays or somthing. It was just wrong, man, and I know I'm not the only one there who felt that way.
Those actors were definitely painful to watch....I was referring more to the comment about Penn and Bono. Sean Penn's not too bad of an actor...

Anyway, I was happy I was able to make it to the event with my sister and my friend. And I'm glad that THIS site exists...Thank all of you guys who started it all....

As for the programs showing up on eBay, that will probably happen pretty soon. That's the way these things seem to go. You can avoid that by sending me a private message with your mailing address and I will put one in the mail for you. The first three of you who do that anyway. That's all I have (They're all gone - sorry).

I have about 10 programs that I can provide on a first come, first serve basis. If you who would like them could PM me, I will send you by PM my address so that you can send a SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope) to me, and I will send a program by return mail. I will announce here in this thread when I have gotten the total number of responses.

Interesting. Spent a few days as a Reader at The Huntington a couple years
ago: English Renaissance Poetry and Madrigals mostly (unaware that our
hero even existed-English Major, so of course totally ignorant). I assume Buk
would have gotten a kick and probably another totally original poem out of
it.

fuck, my IP blocker was blocking the pics. Thanks!

judging from the numerous bald(ing) heads, I would say that most people were 45 or more ;)

I'd say 75% of the people there were in their 40's or older, some were very old, but there was also a good number of younger types there. A very mixed crowd.

I got sleepy.
but he got to hang out with Bukowski for a time, so I guess he wins.

yr.yr.yr.yr.yr. - who can read that shit?
I am distracted by the pretense.

it's totally pretense in literature.

but kids use these things a lot in their emails, blogs and SMS nowadays. the daughter of my last girlfriend even shortens whole sentences down to single letters. (like "hdgdl" means "hab dich ganz doll lieb" = "love you a lot." etc.) it's the newspeak of the computer&cellphone-age.
