For all that buk wrote of horse racing, I can't remember him mentioning the Kentucky Derby. Or has this damned flu that I have clouded my mind?

I'm not sure he did mention it - I get the sense that he just looked at racing as means to beat the system that couldn't be beat (and make some $ at it) and he was really only interested in the tracks he frequented, such as Santa Anita.
