Essential Bukowski: Poetry

it's a beauty.
I like the US-cover, but despise the UK-cover, which looks like a Barnum&Bailey-design.

I much prefer the US cover. Looking forward to reading the collection, which will be first comprehensive demartinized anthology. That's worth celebrating.

Gentlemen,
While you wait for this to come out, I strongly adivise you to purchase Vol. 1-3 of Back to the Machinegun. All three volumes will be about the same price as Abel's new book and you'll be incredibly satisfied.

Please understand that this is not a knock on Abel's new book -- this is just something to keep you from chronically playing with your balls until Abel's book comes out.

Trust me: Back to the Machinegun Rocks!

Was 'WWII' & 'Death of an Idiot' included?

Got my first copy today. Nice production overall; it's sturdy, and the paper quality is pretty good. No galleys this time around.
Did Bukowski handwrite his drafts first? I thought he went straight to the typewriter?

“The essential doesn't change.” Beckett
Correct me if I'm wrong here but if I've got my history correct Buk only ever wrote out his poems if he couldn't sit at the typewriter. Early on he had to sell his typewriter to the pawn shop sometimes so...write it out. He wasn't always "snatching phrases here and there" or "scribbling down random thoughts on scraps of paper". Mostly it was "back to the machine gun", sitting at HIS typewriter and towards the end, at the computer.

And as to first drafts? I don't think he ever really though of poems that way. If he thought they sucked he may have discarded them or reused portions for other poems. But "first drafts" didn't cross his mind too much with the poetry it seems.

There are notebooks full of poems and stories in one (or more?) of the university collections. I'm sure Abel has seen them and may have copied some pages.

He wrote a few times about his neighbors complaining about his typing, saying he had to stop at 10 p.m. I don't think that happened at DeLongpre or Carlton Way, but before that, pre-1965, it seems like he may have had to write things out by hand more often. And of course on those occasions when he didn't have a typewriter...

I always wondered what Bukowski poems would sound like if they were read by a guy who also does voices for direct-to-DVD cartoons, talking sex dolls and English language AXE Body Spray commercials that run on local TV stations in the Philippines. Now I know. Unfortunately.

To cleanse your palate of that soulless noise, feel free to peruse links to more than 250 recordings made by the poet himself.

And make sure to come back in a few days when we'll be giving away 10 copies of Essential Bukowski with the lovely UK cover to lucky readers in the UK and Ireland, courtesy of 4th Estate in the UK.

The fun never stops at the fun factory.

Fuck you man. My balls need the attention. I need them to keep their healthy glow.

That must be from the Kindle edition? Neither print version has a table of contents.

Book will be added to the database some time today. Here it is.

I haven't used Abel's source notes to update the individual poem dates for most of those yet.

It looks like Amazon.com have a hardcover version, but Amazon.co.uk only have a softcover version. That's weird.

Allegedly* you can buy a hardback copy at TBD for 24,75 €.

* I say "allegedly" because whenever I ordered a hardcover copy** there they've sent me a paperback one (for the price of a hardback copy ).
** Only once, to tell the truth.

Thanks, zobraks! Unfortunately, TBD charges €29.25 inc. shipping when I follow your link. It's no doubt because TBD adds 25% VAT on behalf of the Danish state, just like English Amazon does. Everything here is sold with an added 25% VAT, inc. books.
I just ordered a copy from TBD. Now I just pray they´ll send me the American hardcover they show on their website. :)

If so, I´ll have to complain since it says hardcover and shows a photo of the American hardcover version. I better keep both my fingers and my toes crossed. :p

Are Flophouse and The Soldier, His Wife and the Bum the versions from 'The Last Night of the Earth Poems'?

Both poems differ from their appearances in WR, the latter even has a slightly different title: The Soldier, The Wife and the Bum.

I was surprised the price tag on this one was so low. I imagine the quality is pretty good?

I don't know about the quality. The paper inside seems nice enough. But the casewrap on the hardcover is plain paper, it isn't coated (like a textbook). So the copy I have here had white (rubbed) corners when I took it out of the shipping box. Don't know if I've ever seen that before on a commercial book, but I doubt it matters much for this title. I don't see it selling for a premium 20 years from now.
