Hey from Indian reader

Hey all Bukowski brothers. This is Sujit from Pune, India. Came across the website while looking for commonalities between Dylan and Bukowski. Found some interesting threads, poems. Signed up. Hope to keep in touch with the forum from now on. Cheers. Those who are interested can add me on FB. https://www.facebook.com/phatak.sujit
Have very few Bukowski friends in my friend list, it would be great to have more of them.

Good to meet you Sujit. I never heard of Pune so I looked it up on weather.com. Looks like your forecast is basically thunderstorms every day. Is that what got you into Bukowski?

That and a shitty relationship. Although the weather forecast looks that way because it is monsoon around these parts of the world. All will be cleared in 2 months and the Winter will set in.

Welcome, Sujit.

Two of my favorite writers, but, in my mind, they have little in common. Perhaps a disillusionment with how things are is common to them, but how they express that (which is all that really matters) is completely different. Their style development may have followed a similar pattern (early = simple, then becoming much more full of imagery and eventually becoming less "ornate" and more to the point in later years (probably applies a bit more to Buk than to Dylan)), but the differences in style are much greater in magnitude than the magnitude of possibly similar periods of style, if you will.

Sounds like our weather lately. We have had rain nearly every day, often thunderstorms for the last month.

Welcome Sujit.
Do you read Bukowski in English or Hindi? Are the translations decent? I ask because, as is often the case, people from India speak better English than most Americans.

Best,
Bill

Hey Bill,

I read Buk in English. Indian languages cannot do justice to American fiction and poetry in my opinion. So, the translations are off the table for me. And as far as I know Buk hasn't been translated into Hindi or other indian languages on a large scale. Some literary magazines might have produced some translations here and there but nothing mentionable as such.

Bests.

Thanks for the welcome, feels great to connect with fellow BukHeads!
HI, Sujit! I'm also a fan of Dylan and Bukowski. Welcome!
Hi! That's nice man. Great to meet you. I love both these guys a lot. My heroes. Their works occupy such distinct spaces. Genius, both of them.

Buk in literary magazines in India??? I would love to get my hands on an Indian literary magazine! Any decent English language ones? What is the poetry/literature scene like over there? Are people writing street-level stuff or is all that weird mix of Tagore on one side and Bollywood on the other?

Related question, what is the literary language over there? Is it pretty balanced between English and the native languages?

-m

p.s. there are some Bukowski sisters around here too - Black Swan being one!

I said they 'might' have produced something, I don't know if any of them have done that. It was a speculation of very less importance. In fact I had translated a few poems and had sent them to an underground magazine, they had rejected those. :)

English literary scene of India is fucked. No good writers so far. Phony pieces of shit are plenty and they sell good too. And no street credentials for these elitist cocksuckers. India is a doomed State in my opinion. Democracy is fucked, culture is fucked etc. There are about 30 states here and each has its own language and elites speak English. Middle class tries to copy the elites. India in most parts is where America was 70-80 years ago culturally, socially. And the literary language is mostly the native one. Some states are as big as some big European countries with a population that overflows. So literary scene of every state is different. A few poets, writers creating good stuff and dying poor or going insane or burning out. Society moves on. The thing is Indian languages are fighting a final war against English for quite some decades now. My prediction is they are gonna lose it in next 200 or so years. And then India culturally will be a colony of America and the West, if it doesn't go down the drain before that. It is not necessarily a good thing or a bad thing. It is just a minor cultural change in the big scheme of things. And besides the poverty and inequality is very big a problem here. Third world country. So culture, poetry, writing etc. are at the bottom of the things to be worried about. Consumerism is taking a giant hold since last 2 decades after India liberalized the economy and gave open grounds for American capitalism. etc. etc.

There is no CASTE system here, even though the long-time members act otherwise sometimes. Don't soften your voice. Don't look down at your shoes when you talk... Just look 'em straight in the eyes and shout "POGUE MAHONE!!!"

Truth is, I got laid off and I no longer have adult day care. Woke up at 5:30 am, had 2 beers and went back to bed. No pitty party here, trust me. Just in that bind of deciding whether to go back to the grind or just say fuck it. I have no wife or children, so it's easier than most. But it's never all that easy. In the meantime, thanks for your patience and excuse my stupidity until I'm in adult day care again.
