I use to listen to Howard Stern and do not remember him ever mentioning Bukowski. Someone brought Stern up on another thread and the reactions seemed mixed. So, could one of Howard Sterns big fans fill me in?

By the way , today is his 55th birthday and Rush Limbaugh's 58th. We may as well discuss radio talk shows and Bukowski. (Wow, this is way out in left field)

Nah, I wouldn't take anything personally over that. I think Stern's funny, but funny like a kid giggling about boobies and farts.

Please, there are plenty of people who don't like H Stern, I was not looking for that. Howard Stern is intelligent and may have read Bukowski.
Now that I think about it he is quite into himself.

gerard - i've been listening to his show since they started airing it in toronto in the 90's - i've got it on right now actually - i've never heard him talk about buk - others have referenced him on the show but stern has no experience or opinion as far as i've heard. as much as i enjoy aspects of the show he seems to have pretty juvenile tastes as far as arts and culture are concerned so doesn't seem likely.

I used to listen to Stern in the 90's, and I really liked his radio show at that time. I liked him/(Robin Givers), enough at that point to go and spend the $$ to see his film, "Private Parts", of which I was on the fence about afterwards. Once he came out with his cable TV program, I turned, and could not really stand him/them any longer.
Typical American Sell Out- IMO. CRB:)

I lived in and about new york city starting 1988 for 17 yrs....Stern, I understand, Developed a powerful audience, he was outrageous, charismatic, and challenging...but I, personally, never found any use for him. Period.

Howard is not for everyone; but many love him. Loyal following, etc. Lived in NY for many, many years, too. He is a character; and a caricature of himself all at once. Either you get (dig) Howard, or you don't. There doesn't seem to be a middle.

Yeah Chronic, his whole-'ain't I a stud' thing, meanwhile he's sooo fuglee;and then you have all those broads (sorry Ladies), taking their shirts off, which became the bulk of the show. BOOR-ING!CRB:)

It is a show for the boys, but there are a lot of women who do love the show.

Hi GHKL, I liked the show when there was an element of thought to it. When it turned into a titty show they lost me. I have an appreciation of nice breasts,(I carry around a couple myself), but the whole 'LOOK AT ME' thing,(HIM and them) was a real turn-off for me. I have tits, it's cool; but I decided that I don't need to investigate /explore his interest in them on a daily basis. Plus he IS not an attractive man. CRB:)

Very true.

I liked him back when his show was on E!. Couldn't get him on the radio around here and E! was the only way I could get my "fix." Now that he's on Sirius, I don't have the urge to check him out anymore. My interest in him was likely motivated by his controversy. And since he's on a network that lets him say whatever he wants, he's just not that interesting anymore.

To me, anyway.

To say Howard Stern isn't an artist is ABSURD. The man has written movies, music, and two New York Times best sellers. You may not appreciate him, or what he does. It's the same as saying Johnny Ramone was not a good guitar player because he only played power chords.

I was the one who originally brought up Stern in another thread, by merely innocently mentioning I discoverd Stern and Bukowski in the same year 1991. It was just a coincidence, and a few people started bashing Stern. He may not be for everyone, but he certainly cannot be denied as an artist, or as a non-talent shock jock.

BTW I have listened faithfully every single day that I could for the last 18 years to Stern and have NEVER heard him, nor anyone else on the show ever mention Bukowski. Howard has always been so deep into NY that 2 years ago he didn't even know of places like In and Out Burger and Jack In The Box, that apparently don't exist that far East. He's an avid reader and talks weekly of the books that he's read, but I have never heard him mention Bukowski.

I listen to almost every minute of Stern's broadcast and have for many, many years. He makes me laugh. I remember one of his sidekicks, Artie Lange, mentioning Bukowski once although I can't remember the context. It didn't sound like Stern knew anything about him, which is no surprise.
