That's the funny part - I paid him in Swedish Krona. He though he was rich, but 10,000kr is like eight bucks American.

Here's a blog post about the amount of work that's going into the hardcover edition of this book: http://chancepress.com/2011/06/working-with-300-year-old-paper/

I kind of wanted to make a big deal about it, since it's not something that anyone would even notice when looking at the final product, but it speaks to the level of quality we're putting into this book in order to do justice to the art inside.

So read it, and think of just how sad you will be when the eight copies sell out and you didn't buy one!

Honestly, after reading that article, I am convinced the two of you never leave your workstation, you are nearly turning the art of bookmaking into a science, blows me away. So do you have any copies of the hardcover left, and if so, how much will it run me, as I may take one off your hands then.

Wow, that's a lotta work. I would of just used Pritt Stick ;)

I have to ask though, won't the adhesive layer applied to the paper alter the way in which mjp's drawings will appear? As per the above, how much do you think these HB's will go for?

Questions. Questions. Questions.

Well fuck me, that is beautiful.

Is it irony that pages from An Exposition the Five Poetical Books of the Old Testament are adorning the cover of a book by a godless heathen? I think it may be. That or blasphemy. Either of which is fine.

we haven't settled on a price for the HC, but i'll post here before sending it out to our email/facebook lists. i do know they'll be less than $100 (probably significantly less), but justine and i haven't quite decided how much less yet. if you want one, send us an email and we'll hold one for you.

also - the adhesive layer is on the back of the paper, where the lining is attached. keep in mind that the paper is dual sided - meaning that although it looks like the adhesive is being applied to the side facing out in the picture, the final binding just has the raw, uncoated side of the paper on the outside.

I saw the 'Lord' so many times on the cover image I think I'm being called. So the choice is, do I become a missionary, or send an email reserving a copy?

Sorry for being a dunce over the adhesive layer. I did think it would be a bit strange. I'm thinking of doing laminated covers and getting the writers to draw a cover image, which the buyers can then spit on and wipe off.

only one of us never leaves the work station - the other puts a hearty, home-cooked meal on the table every night ;)

just a heads up that there is only 1 hardcover left! (everyone who has emailed or private messaged me has one - as does bill, who posted in the thread but didn't specifically email me.) so, you know... don't snooze too long!

also, in other mjp news, the special edition of 'flying wedge' sold out today, so this is obviously an author in great demand.

to that point, the HC's are now gone!

if you didn't get one, don't despair - there will be a larger edition with arches paper covers decorated with 150-year old paper scraps and hand-lettered by the author... so all is not lost.

thanks carol! and as awesome as these are, i'm tempted to throw out a 'y'all ain't seen nuthin' yet'... since i'm just about ready to start focusing on our next book, which i have some pretty rad ideas for.

also - i can't wait to see the inkpoems! after the amount of time i put into these bastards (which - let's be honest - was about as much time as i put into ONE copy of scribbles!), i'm excited to see them completed.

In my defense, before you do see them, I was drinking heavily and standing at the kitchen counter when I was painting those things, so you may want to temper your enthusiasm.

But, you know, to anyone who paid for a hardcover - they're awesome! Seriously. You'll be all, "Holy shit, this should be in the museum of modern art!" And you're right, of course.

trade editions are done (well, 12 of them at least) and ready to ship! i'll list them here for sale as soon as i pick them up from the post office. the price will be $9 for the trade edition and $20 for the signed edition (and $75 for the amazing hardcovers, but those are now sold out).

i'm pretty happy with the trades - i found some cardstock-weight vellum to use as the wrapper over a piece of laid cardstock to give the book some weight, and it looks cool. i was going to laser-print the covers directly on vellum, but our printer was acting up, so i ordered a giant tube of black gocco ink from japan and screenprinted them. the ink doesn't really soak into the paper like it does on normal paper, so the cover almost looks like it has been hand lettered - it has a neat, rough quality to it that wouldn't be there if i had laser printed them (luckily we didn't fix the laser printer until after i ordered the gocco ink). the downside is that the ink doesn't totally set - you'll likely never notice it, since it is dry to the touch, but if you rub it with an eraser, you can get it to smear. just to be safe, each book will be shipped in a folded piece of mylar to protect the cover printing. and if you have a problem with it, just buy the signed edition for $20!
