New from Chance Press, redux! Hines chapbook

Bukfan

"The law is wrong; I am right"
Received my copy yesterday. Great poems (the one called "liars", is one of my favorites), good paper quality, nice colored classy end papers, great looking print - in short, another great book from Chance Press.

you still don't have yours?? nervas is in LA (or near LA) and he got his already (well, he got A Common Thread, the Hines was a separate envelope, so maybe he doesn't have it).

can i just say that the postal service is this country is a complicated, unpredictable, unreliable piece of shit. we've been charged 3 different prices for the exact same envelope, and there's no pattern to it either (we've tried 3 different post offices, a different set of requirements for 'letter', 'flat', and 'parcel' every time).

you might have the deluxe before the trade: i have a bunch of them done and ready to send out, the rest should be completed in the next couple of days (as long as i don't make any fuckups like i did in the last couple of days).

Abord the Yorikke!
My copy arrived dog eared but I am still very happy with it.

My postman was determined to get it in the mailbox no matter what.

Beautiful paper, good printing job and beautiful artwork.

Beautiful Hines'poetry.

Thanks Justine, Jordan and Stephen.

apologies to anyone who received a damaged book: the print was a little too big and the chipboard didn't do enough to keep the book unbendable, in some cases.

I've been holding vigil by the mailbox for 6 days now. I only come indoors to pee, eat pizza rolls, and post to this forum. My neighbors have been fairly tolerant of the odor that has resulted from not showering, but sadly I have not yet received it.

I received the deluxe Hines today from the very cool Hurders.

Excellent. AMAZING! Astounding!

You mentioned that there were production problems. I cannot find any. I can only imagine what you had in mind if this was not as good as you wanted it to be! Maybe corners made of pure gold?

Best,
Bill

The postman was much kinder to me. No folding, bending.

And I love the craftsmanship here - especially the rivets holding each poem in place. It looks great and reads great, like all of Stephen's writing.

One very minor "complaint". It says the deluxe editions are lettered A-O, but it looks like the identifying letter was left off of mine. Which I personally don't care about, but thought I should point out.

Jordan uses a tiny micro pen to letter his books. you have to look very closely. it almost looks like a flaw in the paper.

kids today, man.... ;)

this is a common complaint - and i'm sure the owners of copy "D" and "O" are going to wonder who has which one. i am opening up a standing offer for any chance press customer - if you would like a magnifying lens (not really a "magnifying glass," since it is around the size and thickness of a business card), i will include one free of charge with your next purchase from chance press. because, despite the good-natured grumbling, the numbers/letters aren't getting any bigger (and in fact, i'm pretty upset that there isn't a smaller sized rapidograph pen than what i already have).

What CAN you do about these kids today ? Except take them up on their free offerings.

For the record, I could see that there was something on that paper, but it looked like a small drop of ink to me. Which it kind of is, I guess.

Thanks for the offer Jordan.

old and in the way
In addition to making the numbering and lettering really tiny, you could also use invisible ink (lemon juice) so that people will have to put a flame under the paper to see what it says.

Just kidding of course, but I gotta admit, to my 52 year old eyes, even with my reading glasses on, I can't read the numbering. It looks like a few dribbles of ink.

I say to go smaller! It is certainly like your signature. Run with it.

Maybe print your business cards on little magnifying glass cards. That would be really cool!

Usually wrong.
On bending by the mailman, I always cut out a thin sheet of cardboard, same size as the book, and include that in the envelop. It makes it harder or impossible for the mailman to fold the envelop.

Were those packages of the exact same weight ? The price varies with the weight of the contents. If they were the same weight and you saved your receipts, you have a legitimate complaint that you should follow up on.

for the hines chap we wrapped the book in a piece of thick cardstock, but apparently that didn't prevent damage.

dave: the packages were identical, and we were informed it has nothing to with weight but rather dimension - that is what differentiates between 'letter', 'flat', and 'parcel'. but each person at each post office has a different idea on what the requirements are for each one. go figure.

OK Justine, you know what ? Those post office creeps were MEAN to you and I'm going to tell my DAD !

Seriously - He's a retired postal worker and can probably clear this up.

:) thanks dave

you know, postal workers really are fucking mean in this country. the post offices here are dirty, grim places, the staff don't give a shit, and it's a far cry from what i'm used to in NZ. guess that's a whole other thread.

I think someone wrote a book about that...

The deluxe Hines book is really something. I was expecting something larger - I guess there is nothing in the pictures to provide a sense of scale - but the size is perfect for displaying. Nice work, Oakland contingent.

Appreciate your friends
In response to Justine's post:

I get along with the Post men and women who deliver my mail. In fact my rural route carrier from my old house lives in this town and I consider him a friend. There has been an occasional prick from time to time but that's life.
Back on subject- I love the work and works coming from Chance Press, good job on all of that.

In Delaware, they remember you by your face and do NOT want to see an ID when you write a check. There are 4 or 5 people at the main PO and they all know me, even though I'm only in there once every couple weeks usually.

Now, when I was in SF, CA, I had the displeasure of going to a Post Office and had the rudest Chinese lady in a long time. She was very nice to the Chinese lady in front of me, but seemed to be annoyed by me (for no reason, really), even though I was nice, polite and only had one package (that was a flat rate envelope). It was a painful experience. Dark, dirty post office. UNDERSTAFFED (only one person), Rude government worker...

Bill
p.s. Another reason for Chance Press to relocate to Delaware!

when i was planning the design, i didn't take into consideration that the little metal brads would pile on top of each other and make the book puff out. which means it's really not a book that should be shoved into a shelf, but rather set out somewhere, where it can kind of bounce open a little.

and let me tell you: popping back the sharp little metal prongs on 442 of those little fuckers is tough on the fingertips.
