Two Bukowski poems: The night I broke away from Hemingway and My God. Both the same as the manuscripts. My God appears in Sifting with the usual changes that gets the arguments flowing.

Arguments? What arguments?
Clearly Bukowski rewrote everything after it was published. He did it in his spare time, when he wasn't writing new poems or novels or screenplays. He would sit down at his desk with a stack of magazines that had published his work and go through them, methodically removing references to drinking, and replacing his original lines and stanzas with dull, pedestrian, bad writing.
Then Bukowski would draw an asterisk on the new manuscript and mail it to John Martin, with instructions to publish the revised work after he was dead.
He did it all the time. I thought everyone knew that.
