I saw No Country For Old Men a few weeks back on a plane. GREAT movie. Oh yeah, saw Iron Man last week. Entertaining for sure. The whole cast did a great job. Wonder if they could make a suit like that for fat guys like me?

Two nights ago we watched "Alice's Restaurant" with Arlo Guthrie from 1969. Hell, I didn't even know it EXISTED. It was very cool. Right along with the story in his 18+ minute song but obviously much more detailed.

It was really weird too to see the 22 year old Arlo and know that just last year I got to meet him, shake his hand and thank him for all the great music over the years. He's still making good music btw.

Last time I saw Arlo Guthrie he was blissed out on a lawn in front of a house in Santa Monica where some guru/cult woman named "Ma" was holding forth from an inside bedroom.

I did not go in to get an audience with Ma, but the woman who had brought me there did. I sat on the porch and tried to avoid the people in and around the house (and there were a lot of them) because they were just really fucking creepy.

I didn't say anything to Arlo - what's to say? "Hey, your dad was awesome!" He had a couple good songs, Arlo did, but it's hard to operate in a shadow that size. Ask Julian Lennon or Ziggy Marley.

Never heard of Ma before. Nor will I research anymore about her.

I have almost every album Arlo has put out since '67. To me, he's a completely different animal than Woody. And succeeded at standing on his own regardless of his pop.

Well, I hear ya. Julian (or maybe more so Sean) and Ziggy have succeeded too. But it's just weird to go into the same field as your father when your father is a cultural icon, that's all I'm saying. The cards are stacked against you, and it doesn't matter how great you may or may not be, you will never compare.

Or maybe it's just me, you know. If I was younger and had never heard or seen any Woodie Guthrie recordings I could take Arlo Guthrie on his own merit. But I have, so I can't. And I can't look at Lennon's kids without thinking of John, or any of Marley's multitude of performing offspring without thinking of Bob. So the comparison is always there for me, I can't help it.

But I'm sure there are a lot of 25 year olds out there who never heard of these guy's fathers and who dig them just fine without the history. Their father's records would probably sound like crappy cut-out bin oldies to them.

If there was still such a thing as a cut-out bin, I mean. ;)

I just watched "Zappa in Barcelona". It's a DVD with one of his last concerts (May 17, 1988) from the 1988 tour, which was to be his last tour. The Spanish audience goes wild when he plays Ravel's "Bolero". Great concert! It lasts over 2 hours and contains many of the songs from the "Broadway the Hard Way" CD, as well as many of his most famous songs...

Just watched
Things We Lost in the Fire.
Turned out to be one of those kind of movies that I'm glad to see just once,
and be mighty appreciative that they made it,
and be mighty happy to have seen it,
yet still feel no need to see it again.
(That's another new thread-> movies you need to see, but just once)

Benico Del Toro and Halle Berry are awesome
(and even the 2 kids in it
(and I have allergies to kids)
are Great!).

I'm surprised Buk never was turned on by Heroin....
I liked (loved) it because it killed my too emotional self.
I always think Buk thought too much to.

(I mean, being high on H, I could look at my shoe, and it could be on fucking fire, and all I could probably conjure up would be
that junked-up chortle and maybe a confidential whisper, 'oh look, my shoe's on fire, ha!))

Saw Kung Fu Panda & The NEw Indiana Jones movie last night. Both pretty good. I saw them at the local drive-in, which was cool. The drive-in is closing this year after 59 years in business. It is the last one in Delaware and one of a dying breed.

What's Happening! The Beatles in America a.k.a. Beatles: First U.S. Visit - the Maysles brothers (the guys who made Gimme Shelter and Grey Gardens [a must see!]) film of the brief February 1964 Beatles visit. Made for Granada TV in the UK, not seen much in the US. Really great, especially the outtakes in the "special features." I've seen the performances a million times, but this is mostly cinéma-vérité behind the scenes shit. Worth a watch.

New York - 14.5 hour documentary by Ric Burns. I've watched the first four hours and it only seemed like three hours. ;) Really very good so far.

Apocalypto - really engrossing and exciting despite the fact that it was made by Mel Gibson, who, if he would have died right after making The Road Warrior, may have been an icon, but who lived instead and became little more than a punch line for racist and hillbilly jokes.

Plagues & Pleasures on the Salton Sea - eh. Seemed like it went on forever. The first half, that explained the history of the area and introduced a few residents was fine, but then it dragged on. And on.

The Martian Child - eh again. Nice. Well done. Predictable. Cliched.

Rocket Science - I barely remember this. What happened again?

I just saw "Shattered Glass", about a journalist who's making up his articles. It's based on a true story! The guy (Stephen Glass) worked for The New Republic and there's an interview with the real Stephen Glass in the Bunus Material. It's a good little movie. Absolutely worth watching. Incredible it's so easy to write a made up article and get it published...

"The Big One", by Michael Moore. A documentary about corporations downsizing and moving to Mexico to increase their profits further. The losers is of course the American workers now unemployed. If you like Michael Moore's documentaries, then you'll like this one as well...

maybe we'll have to come visit you before january because i MUST experience this when i come to the US. we never had drive-in movies in NZ, although there has been the very very rare occasion when one has been set up for a night.

Sadly it will be gone by the time you two come out. October is the end. They are never open in the winter (That is right. You need to get used to Winter and Summer being reversed!)

I brought my two kids so we backed the minivan up and pulled the seats out to watch the movie. Yes, very tame of us....

The funny thing is that in the 80's, the theater fell on hard times and changed to an all porno drive in, so I'm sure there has been some action in that lot. The weird thing is that you can see the screen from the road and it is THE major road that goes through Delaware (Route 13-Dupont Highway). I know a guy that used to hang out on the adjacent land when he was a kid and watch the shows...

I liked Iron Man.

I am looking forward to The Incredible Hulk.

I hope Norton can do for the Hulk what Downey did for Iron Man.

I collected Daredevil comic books as a kid. Affleck ruined the movie...or the director did...or both.

i've heard nothing but good things about iron man. everytime i try to go see a half decent movie, my friend has already seen it and we end going to something totally lame like 30 days of night or street kings.

The Silver Moon Drive-In in Lakeland(ish), Florida is always open because Central Florida is always hot.

i guess it was the producers (as usual) by forcing the screenplay-writer to follow their rules, forcing the director following their rules, forcing the actors ...

most times it's the producers.


when i was a kid, i used to read Marvel (Spider Man, Silver Surfer, X-Men) and DC (Batman, The Flash) comics too. so far none of the picturizations i've seen really catched me.

let's see what 'iron man' gives me.
