Does reading Bukowski make you want to write?

I vote to move this discussion of postino's blog to the Would You Suggest Writing as a Career? thread.

If not further :D

Anyway, his answer to this question is already there...
Reading Bukowski encouraged me to consider writing.

I don't think you even read the whole thing. . .

Well,
" Once you've looked at a thing,you ought to remember it forever . . . Don't force your intelligence . . . it's reason that gums up everything . . . Give your instinct a chance . . . Once it gets a good look, the game is won . . .
It'll never deceive you . . . " Celine

Well, I guess what my instinct is saying is that my novella is too rough for anyone to read. my instinct's telling me to stuff it in the wastebasket. But there's a little part of my brain that's saying, let it be, let it be.

Good idea.

Oh come on! What would any of us know about literature or writing, anyway? You should carry on. Keep writing every day, and send your work out to a select group of important publishers, so they can get to work establishing your rightful place in literary history.

non-fiction is the only writing that really matters. all of this self-styled "poetry" and "literature" is for the birds.

I am currently being paid (yes, paid !) to write a "Short History of the Microwave Oven" and if you want my opinion it's better than anything Bukowski ever wrote. It is brutally honest, factually correct and rarely resorts to flowery language, purple prose, self-pity or angst.

Can I send stuff out that I've already published online? Where should I start looking for places to send it?

Well, the more I think about it, the more I think you should send it directly to the Library of Congress or the British National Museum. There is no current publication deserving of your work. Go straight to the national archives, and hit as many as you can. We need your work to survive long after individual countries pass into dust.

That's a huge compliment coming from a Bukowski fan.

Sheer brilliance.

If he is identified as a troll, then it is only a matter of time before Karma takes hold and a hiatus is warranted...

For Buk

Well shit fuck and damn...odd that posting a poem or two would be taboo on a site like this but my post yesterday was apparently deleted by the moderator. Sure, a lot of crap would pour out if everyone posted their poetry but it seems natural to allow some. Yeah, I write poetry and yeah I'm influenced by Bukowski but the poetry is all me, 100%. I have my own tales to tell. A few have been published here in South Africa, one will be out in The Artisan Journal soon. I've self-published a book of short stories and a novella, all written back in the 1980's, you can find out more at http://dougdownie.book.co.za. And how come people have to have cute little monikers here, its not a porn site. Anyway, I'll try this again, a little tribute to Buk.

Buk Was a Monster

Buk was a monster
pounding out poems by the pound
every night
sitting at his typer with
the grape.
Not a bad life
and an admirable thing.

Not me.
I'm happy if I can eek out
a thing that somehow
in some fashion
has this ever so slight resemblance
to a poem.
A thing that says something to
shake or slap a reader
into thinking,
or feeling,
something
and do it in a graceful way
with very few words.

Buk had multiple orgasms
every night.
Not me.
I'm lucky if I can have
one a day.

One More Night

Butt naked in my lounge
I write poetry
read
watch
drink
smoke
jackoff
play
shit
brush
then finally
sleep.

In the morning I'm ready
to start all over again.

Okay. So tell me, which do we allow and which do we remove?

Were you forced to have a "cute little moniker"?

You're off to a good start. Keep digging.

old and in the way
I'm rather fond of my cute little moniker. It does tricks, you know. And I can send it around with a cup to collect coins for me while I grind my organ.

My momma gave me my moniker...and as for crap pouring out...you have certainly done your part, Mr. Downie

I'm not really sure what it is anymore.

But I know what it's not, and that's a fan poetry site. ;)

Hey Doug.

I've been to your site. I've read the poems you have posted there.
I've looked at your picture, I've read your bio, and I've looked at the nice
things people have written about you.

Now that you are here, and now that you have posted the nice tribute
poem to Charles Bukowski which you have written, feel free to look around
here. There are a lot of things to see.

Currently we have a little situation brewing in the Los Angeles part of the
world. The bungalow where Hank wrote so many treasured poems, and
stories, and prose is being scrutinized for historical classification. It's a
pretty exciting time for fans.

Also, there are a few threads where people are sharing what they are
currently reading, and listening to. It's a good thread to browse to find out a
little more personal information about the other folks on the forum.

Then there is the links the administrator has set up over there to the left.
The links like, well, like at your site, the photos, words, and so forth.

Look around, and read, and feel comfortable being here. Kind of like you ask
us to do in going to your site.

Welcome. We're glad you're here. And I hope you come back often and
participate when you can. There's a lot here for a fan of Charles Bukowski like
yourself.

It is what it is
I never wanted to be a writer and I wouldn't suggest it as a career...
Not when a computer can come up with this...
(This just arrived in my junk mail folder)

Father having disappeared of his own will
and snapshots
when your life flashing before you
i had told her, said
miss marple. Miss blacklock means in the house took the
matter in hand:
its not for the base hunger of unqualified knaves:
ridiculous any more.
Where was everybody when selecting,
of course, those whom he thought would be proud and disdainful,
would say, he can have his eyes on him at once. 'well?'
he said sharply.
O' a gentleman, to haud his tongue.
I canna
bide.

I don't understand it, so it must be brilliant stuff, right?

why am i suddenly reminded of john nash? (ala hollywood's "a beautiful mind" ...)

there's a code in there somewhere. :p
