all things baseball. if you swing that way

'Dreams from Bunker Hill' is fantastic I must say, probably my favourite, although like you, I don't really have one. Apologies too for hijacking the thread.

For that photo, alone ! A very crafty and gutsy pitcher he was. That weird delivery he had - turning his back to the plate and pausing before spinning and throwing - was developed in response to an arm injury he hid for as long as possible. He knew he was losing velocity, but figured he could fuck with the batter's timing with an unorthodox wind-up. It worked. Just read some background on him and his MLB debut was spectacular. He shutout the Yankees in 1964 on 4 hits and 11 strikeouts in Yankee Stadium. His debut. 23 years old. Sheee-i-i-i-t.....

Let me just re-cap the Cardinals 9th inning today against the Pirates. Score was 4-2, Cards on top, and out comes rookie closer Jason Motte.

Lead-off double...blah blah....RBI single...blah....another double.... a hit batsman...blah, blah, blah....and then a bases-clearing double....

Cards lose 6-4 and the future of baseball in St. Louis, the career of Jason Motte, and democracy itself is now in question.

How was your Opening Day ?

awful.

12-6 loss to the Marlins. the start of another dreadful year.

starting pitching was shaky, bullpen was worse. ugh.

the only upside was listening to the Nationals announcers riff on the new IHOP (sponsor) loaded hash browns.

Let's go Red Sox.

I became a hardened townie after living in Brooklyn for ten years. Shame about the Expo's, I remember well the excitement of '67 and the advent of Canadian baseball. How fascinating it all was...plus Bill Lee ended his day's there.

Bill "Spaceman" Lee - one of the game's most colorful characters. Yeah, it sucks that Montreal could never quite get over the hump as far as playoff baseball is concerned. In the late 80's/ early 90's they drafted a lot of great young talent including Larry Walker, Moises Alou, and Randy Johnson, as I recall. I know there were others....

Lee made me think of Dock Ellis, pitcher for the early 70's Pittsburgh Pirates, who threw a no-hitter on LSD. Just did a little googling on his life and background, and it turns out he asked a poet to collaborate on his auto-biography Dock Ellis In The Country Of Baseball. Don't know if it's any good. The poet was Donald Hall, and I found one of his poems that looked pretty good (to me anyway).

OX-CART MAN

In October of the year,
he counts potatoes dug from the brown field,
counting the seed, counting
the cellar's portion out,
and bags the rest on the cart's floor.

He packs wool sheared in April, honey
in combs, linen, leather
tanned from deerhide,
and vinegar in a barrel
hoped by hand at the forge's fire.

He walks by his ox's head, ten days
to Portsmouth Market, and sells potatoes,
and the bag that carried potatoes,
flaxseed, birch brooms, maple sugar, goose
feathers, yarn.

When the cart is empty he sells the cart.
When the cart is sold he sells the ox,
harness and yoke, and walks
home, his pockets heavy
with the year's coin for salt and taxes,

and at home by fire's light in November cold
stitches new harness
for next year's ox in the barn,
and carves the yoke, and saws planks
building the cart again.

Anybody ever tried the MLB.tv Internet deal ? I decided to use some of my tax refund to treat myself to it this year and I regret it already. Well, I should say that I regret treating myself to the Premium Package, which doesn't make a damn bit of difference most of the time. I'm supposed to have DVR functionality and fancy/schmancy screen resolution, but I'm usually watching the basic broadcast because the fancy shit doesn't work.

I do gameday audio, but have shied away from the tv deal.

I'm listening to a game right now. the free tv previews have always left me cold: freezing, slow video, etc. although it may have been my connection.

So you get gameday audio through the internet ? As a subscription service ?

And yes, the freezing and slow bullshit goes on with me too and I have a decent DSL connection.

yep, I pay for gameday.

as for the tv bit, I have DSL, but it is lacking. not for the connection, but the mlb service..

Yeah, I'm re-thinking the whole video deal myself. Nothing wrong with radio - especially in the hands of a good announcer. Sometimes in the car at night I will tune in Reds games just to listen to Marty Brenneman. I love that guy.

Baseball is about the only sport that translates really, really well to the radio. The rhythm of the game works perfectly, allowing the announcers to "paint a picture" between pitches, batters, and during mound visits. Ahh...this is where we get all manly and poetic like you said in the first post.

I've got MLB network with my cable package. When I ordered FSC (Fox Soccer Channel) it and NHL network came with it. Not too bad, get some interesting games, but a lot of filler and blah-blah-blah.

NHL network is much the same, However, on Saturdays we get the awesome Canadian coverage, replete with the infuriatingly abrasive and bizarre Don Cherry...but that's for another thread

Bob Cole is a great hockey announcer, you probably get to hear him on some of those Saturday Hockey Night in Canada games. he sounds like he just stepped out of 1939. sometimes, he's the only reason I watch hockey.

Rival match-ups this weekend. NY Yankees vs. Bo Sox and StL. Cards vs. Cubs.

The Red Sox won in extra innings last night and the Cards held off the Cubs. Looking forward to more competitive games today and tomorrow.

16-11 Sawx, the Highly unusual but effective Mr. Papelbon throwing...nice day at Fenway, the Cask & Flagon must be a nuthouse.

Bog: You've spent a day or two in Kenmore Sq. it seems! Bogus runs in the 8th after a blown call on Ellsbury at second. Sox should have gone in to the 9th up 12-11, not 16-11. Shit happens, but I hate winning this way.

It really feels like October in April this weekend.

My Cards beat the scuffling (for now) Cubs 8-1. And 4 of those runs were courtesy of God - I mean, Albert Pujols with a grand slam, which broke the 1000-career RBI barrier for him.

We've outscored our rival bastards 31-23 in the 5 games so far and hold a 3 games to 2 advantage. But tomorrow could be another story, with Todd Wellemeyer taking the mound against Ted Lily. Man, Lily is like the Boy Named Sue, with a nasty edge to him. Tough lefty competitor. And Wellemeyer ? He tends to sweat a lot. I'm not kidding. If the temps are anywhere above 70 tomorrow, he will look like Albert Brooks in Broadcast News.

Digging some Gameday Audio now - good ol' Vin Scully calling the Dodgers road game at San Francisco. That man's voice is pure music. A pleasure to listen to, even if he may have lost a bit on his "fastball" at the age of 81. An American treasure.

I'm from Mass dude, spent most of my life there. I'm still cackling about Ellsbury stealing home off Petit and Posada-there may indeed be a God after all.

You would think that they would figure out that it ain't cool.
Ouch for the Dodgers. That'll cost um. But of course being that I am a Giants Fan, even if last few years have been painful, i sorta snicker...

I've never been a big baseball fan. But I do like seeing the Pirates doing well, which isn't often I'm afraid. My Dad likes the Pirates, so I like to see him enjoy the games.

Re Manny Ramirez : It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. He can't be troubled to run out ground balls or work on his defense. And now he won't have to worry about those pesky issues until July.

I have a soft spot for the Pirates, too. Except when they're beating my Cardinals, which seems to be the case the last few years. Their ballpark is beautiful and I have to visit it someday. A friend of mine is a native Pittsburghian and I just might have to tag along on a home visit sometime.
