Of course, editiors may disagree. That is a bit sickening.[/QUOTE]Well, that's a different type of fish, someone who is comfortable plainly stating how great they are. Ha. Usually very creative people will think of a less obvious way to say it. ;)

Usually wrong.

Or, they'll even have doubts that they are any good, fear they are losing their powers, think their stuff is getting worse, not better, and pray nobody notices. Bukowski had confidence in himself as an artist, but he also was thankful that the miracle kept arriving -- he didn't blow his own horn too loudly.

Poor, desperate old man.

Here's a couple books by a "Jory Sherman" (are there more?) from an ad in the October 11, 1968 issue of Open City. You could either visit the Hollywood Shopper on Sunset Blvd or mail your order in.

"The law is wrong; I am right"
From porn and incest stories to run-of-the-mill western stories. What a great leap forward, what progress...:D

Now, now, these are "case histories", scientific stuff. Oedipal stuff. Important stuff. It was, of course, the 1960s and sexual boundaries had to be knocked down in whatever way possible. Using "case histories" was just one way.

And, anyway, Buk got into lots of shit for one of his fictional stories about a child molester. ("The Fiend"?)

But I think JS would have done better to have used a pseudonym back then for these books.

Some of the other titles, not by JS, included for sale in that ad are even further off the scale. Type of thing that helped get Open City and other rags of that era busted for obscenity. Wasn't it a Jack Michelene story on incest that spelled the demise of OC? Could be wrong there.

p.s., as someone (Bob Segarini of The --ahem-- Wackers) said of music, "there is only good and bad music". Same goes for writing, "case histories", poetry, westerns, replies to web forums....

It is what it is
Skinny Dynamite?
It doesn't involve incest, but it is pretty porno.

I have a signed copy I should probably put on ebay as I don't really care for it (i.e. I don't think it's great writing)

True! You have to take into account the times they were written in.

Ah yes, The Fiend. It's not often that somebody writes a story about a child molester where we view it from the molesters point of view. Buk had guts when he wrote it!

Anyone seen "The Woodsman" ? Its a disturbing tale of a paroled offender and his "rehabilitation". Nonetheless, great acting from both Kevin Bacon and Mos Def (as Bacon's parole officer). Kevin Bacon really was terrific in an unsympathetic role.

Though I am unaware of any Buk connections to this screenplay.....
